A Must-See Spot in London: Westminster Abbey

must-see spot in London

If you’re looking for a must-see spot in London, you’ve found it. I figured I would give you all a little insight to one of the most spectacular sights (in my opinion)! This spot is Westminster Abbey.

While there are many other great spots to see in London, this is one you can’t miss!

History of Westminster Abbey

A working church, Westminster Abbey stands as a magnificent tribute to history.

It’s architecture, including the ceilings, chapels, and memorials are all built in a gothic style. Originally founded in 960 as a Benedictine monastery (and no, I am not missing the 1), the church has been the home of multiple coronations, marriages, and the burial ground of many Kings and Queens.

Memorials for significant figures, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Shakespeare, and many others, are scattered around the church. Additionally, the tombs hold Kings and Queens of many generations, poets, authors, and novelists (such as Chaucer, Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, and Laurence Olivier). There are also many other important figures of the United Kingdom buried here.

Important Moments for This Must-See Spot in London

The church itself has also had many important moments. For instance, the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother were held in Westminster Abbey. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was held in 1953. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate) were married in 2011 within the walls of the church.

Tips for Visiting

Every hour, a Priest comes through the speakers for a prayer. If you happen to be in the church during this time, you should stand in silence.

Photography Rules

Unfortunately, photography is not allowed inside the church, but staring at the stunning tombs and architecture is enough to remember the church without a camera! This just means that you need to go to t this must-see spot in London to see it for yourself!
