You’re in a debacle because it’s too hot to run outside, but running five miles on a treadmill sounds like torture. We’ve all been there. To make it a little easier to get motivated to exercise in the summer heat, I’ve compiled five beautiful runs in Tampa Bay that you just can’t turn down (even in 90 degree weather).
Bayshore Boulevard
Bayshore Boulevard is America’s longest continuous sidewalk at 4.5 miles long, boasting views of Hillsborough Bay, Tampa’s downtown, and many historic homes. You’ll never find yourself alone as the sidewalk is constantly filled with bikers, runners, and walkers at all times of the day. There are several water fountains located along this run, however, they are spread out, so be sure to take a quick sip at each one.
Tampa Riverwalk
If you’re looking for a shorter run, look no further. Located in downtown Tampa, The Tampa Riverwalk is one of Tampa’s newest pedestrian walkways expanding 2.5 miles alongside the Hillsborough River. As you run on the Riverwalk, you will have the pleasure of passing many of Tampa’s top sights such as the Amalie Arena (home of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning), the Tampa Museum of Art, Curtis Hixon Park, and many more.
Tampa Bay Beaches
With a constant view of the Gulf of Mexico, beautiful beach homes, and wildlife (dolphins, stingrays, manatees, etc.), you can never go wrong if you choose to run on one of Tampa Bay’s many beaches. With beaches that go on for miles and miles, you can run for as long as your legs let you. Running soon after sunrise or during sunset offers the best views and best times to beat the summer heat.
Courtney Campbell Trail
Following alongside Courtney Campbell Causeway, the Courtney Campbell Trail boasts over 10 miles of paved trail in the middle of Tampa Bay, connecting Tampa to Clearwater. This trail is perfect for runners who want hill training, as bridges are some of the only areas in Florida with an elevation higher than sea level. While running across the bay, you’ll be sure to see some of Tampa’s best aquatic wildlife.
To access the trail, park your car at Ben T. Davis Beach or Cypress Point Park.
The Pinellas Trail
Beginning in Tarpon Springs and ending in St. Pete, the Pinellas Trail offers over 40 miles of paved running space. The trail has both areas of sun and shade and offers runners a mix of scenery. While mostly giving runners peace and serenity with views of Florida’s wildlife, the trail parallels busy roads at certain points.
Be sure to wear sunscreen on all five of these runs as Florida’s UV rays are especially strong during the summer months! And don’t forget to stretch afterwards. What are some of your favorite places to run in Tampa Bay? Let me know in the comments!
