Whiteside Mountain National Recreation Trail

If you’re looking for one of the best views of multiple states, the Whiteside Mountain National Recreation Trail is the way to go. Not only that, but this trail sits on the Eastern Continental Divide of the United States.

It’s a 2-mile loop trail that gains about 500 feet of elevation to get to the lookout areas where you will be at an elevation of 4,930 feet. From the top, you’ll be able to see parts of North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina on a clear day. The hike itself should only take about an hour, but if you bring a little picnic for the views, you can spend more time here.

There is a $3 vehicle fee that you put in an envelope by the trailhead and display on your dash, so be sure to have a few ones with you!

Whitewater Falls Overlook Trail

The Whitewater Falls Overlook Trail is an easy hike and only about a half-mile to get to the overlook. From there, you have the option to take some steps down to the Whitewater Falls Viewing Platform. And from there, there’s another steep trail down to the river from the falls.

This area has a $3 vehicle fee as well.

Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls Trail

Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls Trail is a heavily-trafficked trail in Gorges State Park.

This hike is a 4 mile out-and-back hike through woods that open up to a river and the two falls on the left side of you. When you reach Rainbow Falls, you can head down from the viewing platform to the rocks below.

There’s a perfect picnic spot here when you reach Rainbow Falls. Bringing a blanket or towel to use to sit on is a great idea. And if you choose to take a dip in the water, you’ll definitely want that towel.

As you continue on the hike, it’s only about another .25 miles to reach Turtleback Falls, where the trail ends.

There are a few creeks you need to cross, so just be aware that your shoes may get slightly wet!
