Chefchaouen: The Blue City of Morocco, Africa

Chefchaouen: The Blue City of Morocco, Africa

A beautiful mountain village, the Blue City, is situated right next to the Rif Mountains. It was founded in 1471 when the Muslims and Jews were exiled from Andalucia. A walk through the medina (old town) offers narrow walkways and some peace and serenity.

Although there aren’t many tourist attraction sights, the city itself is a marvel to take in with your eyes as you aimlessly wander the picturesque streets of blue. If you plan to visit Africa, this is a place you have to stop over in.

The Blue City

Now you may be wondering why the city is even blue in the first place. The blue color looks like water to insects, and because of this, they stay away from the walls and insides of homes. Yes, even the insides of homes are painted, too! The blue color also cools off the city streets, offering a balmy temperature.

Exploring Chefchaouen, Morocco

Chefchaouen is home to 17 mosques, one of which is only for women, while the others are for both sexes. This city is almost completely Muslim, which our guide said was wonderful for everyone to understand everyone and help each other out with whatever, whenever.

It is also believed that only cats are clean and should be allowed in the house (which is why cats line almost every street). Dogs are seen as immigrants. Dogs aren’t seen as clean animals in Chefchaouen and because of this, they are all strays that come from families who live in the countryside. From my experience, some dogs will follow your group around all day just to hang out!

When it comes to the people of Chefchaouen, they are very friendly. Some ask you to come in their store, while others offer you some weed (which is apparently very common). Your choice!

As this city mostly offers a picturesque view, I’ll quit talking and let you marvel at the pictures. You can dream about one day going to this blue paradise called “The Blue City.”
